The future of care homes

The care sector is in a time of change, and while there is a degree of uncertainty as to what the future holds, the opportunities are also exciting.

11.6 million people in the UK are aged 65 and over, and this number is expected to rise by 2.4 million in the next ten years.

This increased ageing population, coupled with Brexit, and the stigma associated with a career in care, is putting a strain on the sector as a whole, with the shortage of staff set to increase.

The solution? Technology. Slowly, care homes across the UK are adopting technology such as smart home devices, AI-based tools and patient monitoring equipment, to better serve the needs of residents, whilst reducing the strain from employees.

Nevertheless, the uptake has been slow, which needs to change.

This report looks at the benefits current technology brings, including real-world examples of care homes across the world that have already implemented it.

From there, the report explores future technology that could help to reduce the strain on the care sector. One example is robots. Despite being faced with some trepidation, we need to focus on the benefits, such as their potential ability to tackle the issue of loneliness in the elderly.

We’re personally very excited to see the mass implementation of technology across the care sector, and we hope that once you’ve read the report, you will be too. While our sector may be going through some tough times at the moment, it appears the solution really does lie with new technology.
